Orca and Whale Conservation Safari
Location: Northern Scandinavia
This citizen science expedition combines endangered species conservation, photography, filmmaking, climate change awareness projects and cultural aspects of the Norwegian Arctic region. The expedition will have snorkeling with orcas, humpback whales, cultural excursions. We may also see minke whales, fin whales, seals and sea eagles. We will be onboard a luxury research vessel and go out each day to witness orcas feeding on herring baitballs, visit orca family groups while cruising around the fjords of Northern Norway and witnessing the beauty, serenity and stunning scenery of this ancient and less-traveled region.
This expedition will be a small group of explorers and we are headed to Norway during the fall months. We will be in an area which is only accessible by special permit.
The expedition will be a small group and we currently have spots available for wildlife photographers, snorkelers, filmmakers and citizen scientists. We will be documenting orca individuals, family groups and other cetacean species in this beautiful Scandinavian setting and working within our programs as well as partner programs to create awareness for this Arctic region in regards to cetacean conservation, plastic pollution and climate change.
While on the water we'll also be looking for humpback whales, seals, seabirds such as the sea eagle and could also see minke, pilot and fin whales. The main attraction will of course be orcas and humpbacks and we could literally see hundreds of them! The whales are in our expedition region during this time of year feasting on herring and can even be seen doing their "carousel" behavior, when the orcas surround a school of fish and swim into the center one after another to eat up the tiny fish.
We will also be watching for the northern lights or aurora borealis in the evenings which will create even more photo opportunities as you view this breathtaking spectacle while listening to humpback whales blowing near the boat. In fact, the area we will based in, is known for the best viewing of northern lights in the world!
Our base of operation will be on a large liveaboard research vessel and we are not skimping on amenities. In addition to the liveaboard, we have created a package and will also be assisting you with packing lists, gear, travel advice, safety orientations and more as you prepare for this extreme adventure! We've done the work so you can sit back and enjoy your amazing experience, pre, during and post-expedition.
