This citizen science expedition combines endangered species conservation, photography, filmmaking and scientific study of the Antarctic region. The expedition will have snorkeling with penguins, seals, whales, possible orca sightings, exploration excursions and hiking to witness remote penguin colonies and historic areas. We may see a number of species of whales including humpback, fin, minke, sei, blue whales and we'll be documenting many types of penguins such as Chinstrap, Gentoo and Adelie.
The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the most dynamic parts of the Southern Ocean. Stretching out over 1,500 kilometers toward the tip of South America, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current provides a strong natural barrier, which results in these waters harboring a high percentage of diverse and endemic marine life. 75% of the krill population surrounding Antarctica resides in this area.
Next we will go to the Weddell Sea which is one of the most important bodies of water on our planet, playing a significant role in global climate regulation. The Weddell Sea region has been described as one of the most desolate, yet breathtaking places on the planet by the historian and explorer Thomas. R Henry, the first person to write about the Weddell Sea and the continent of Antarctica.
Protecting the fragile and environmentally important Weddell Sea is the goal of a new Shark Team One marine protected area project!
This expedition will include a small group of explorers and we are headed to the Antarctic region during the spring. We will be in a number of areas which are only accessible by special permit and are assembling a team of conservationists, photography experts, filmmakers and our citizen scientists.
Join us for a perfect 12 days which have been carefully selected for maximum number of charismatic animal sightings and based on historically rich seasonal wildlife viewing:
