"Heads Up Fins Up"™ Initiative
Protects Endangered Whale Sharks!
An Initiative of the Endangered Whale Shark Conservation Program
Take the PLEDGE to help save injured sharks!
This initiative seeks to curb impacts to whale sharks that are becoming severely injured or killed by ship strikes! We are calling attention to this highly endangered shark and its surface feeding behaviors in order to ask shipping and consumer goods companies to create and amend policies for shipping practices near marine protected areas and known shark aggregation sites near the Gulf of Mexico, in Caribbean Sea and through the Yucatan Channel. We seek to protect the last remaining Western Atlantic subpopulation of whale sharks.
We are also asking for support from the general public in this initiative to help save these sharks from damaging human impacts. We seek to bridge the gap for enforcement in existing marine protected areas and to add conservation impact to our marine corridor project off the coast of Mexico as well as create awareness for additional human impacts such as plastic pollution and climate change impacts.
